This weave is similar in appearance to a Montecristi weave. Double-woven Cuenca hats are also available in a single-woven version, often called Brisa. In the open market, these hats are sometimes referred to as “Montecristi hats,” but that is not technically correct. They are made in Cuenca, Ecuador, so they are genuine Panama hats, but they are not genuine Montecristi Panama hats because they were not woven in the city of Montecristi.
This is the Cuenca version of the genuine Panama hat. The weave is a bit more open, and if you hold it to the sunlight, you will notice it is less tight than a Montecristi weave. To many people, the look is very similar, and even the color can be close. Cuenca hats offer an excellent value, giving you the classic Panama hat look at a more affordable price.
This is a genuine Panama hat from Cuenca, Ecuador.

The Classic Plantation Panama hat is known for its larger brim and excellent sun protection. It uses the same block as Fedora #1, but the main difference is the brim. This hat is blocked in a standard oval, which fits most head shapes well. If you know you need a longer front-to-back fit, we also offer a Long Oval blocking option for added comfort and a better fit.
ADD Long Oval Blocking (Special Request)
The front of the crown is 4.1" - 4.3", and the back of the crown is lower than the front, measuring between 3.3" - 3.5", giving it a sloping appearance from the side profile. The height on the side is 4.1" - 4.5".
Prefer a taller crown? We also offer these special-request crown height options:
ADD 1CM Higher Crown Height (Special Request)
ADD 2CM Higher Crown Height (Special Request)
This Classic Plantation Panama hat is blocked on a semi oval hat block rather than a perfectly round one for a better fit.
Snap brim on the front causing the brim to tip downward slightly and upward in the back just a little.
Beyond Serious Sun Protection: Larger brims begin to take on a stronger western look, which can be a great style choice - especially for Texas, or for anyone who likes that bold sun hat appearance. Because of their added size and weight, these larger brims tend to tip downward a bit in both the front and back and can feel a little floppy in the wind. If you add a curled edge to the brim, it will hold its shape much better. Even a small curled edge adds noticeable rigidity and helps the brim keep a cleaner shape.
Brim size can be difficult to recommend because many factors affect the right choice, including where you live, the local culture, how much sun protection you want, and your personal style.
Serious Sun Protection and Serious Style - Larger Than Standard Brims: This brim offers extremely generous coverage. There is a charge for larger than standard brims, and that price difference is already reflected in the price shown. This is because the weaver must spend additional time extending the brim and will charge a little more for that extra work.
We usually need time to make this hat for you because we almost never have this size in stock unless you are viewing it in the stock section. In most cases, this hat will need to be specially woven as a custom-made hat, so please allow extra time for production.
