Make Your Panama Hat a Roll-Up Model
Add this option to your hat order when you want it specially finished for rolling and easier travel.
Our standard Montecristi Panama hat finish includes a substantial leather sweatband, a removable interior liner, and, on most models, a hidden pinch protector. These features provide excellent protection and durability, but their thickness makes it difficult to roll the hat tightly.
When you select the Roll-Up Request, we finish your hat differently to keep it softer and more flexible:
- A soft fabric sweatband is machine-sewn into the hat instead of the standard leather sweatband.
- The interior liner is not installed.
- The hidden pinch protector is not installed.
- Less stiffener, or sometimes no stiffener, is used so the hat remains flexible enough to roll.
Can Any Hat Model Be Made as a Roll-Up?
Yes. Any of our Montecristi Panama hat models can be finished as a roll-up hat because they are woven from the same flexible Paja Toquilla straw.
However, the traditional Optimo is the model we recommend most highly for rolling. Its natural center crease is designed for folding, so it normally returns to its original appearance more easily after being unrolled.
Fedora, Havana, Plantation, Gambler, and other crown styles can also be rolled. Because these models do not normally have a crease through the center of the crown, they may show a temporary center crease after being unrolled. A little light steam and hand shaping may be needed to restore the crown and brim.
Is the Roll-Up Finish Right for You?
This option is especially useful for frequent travelers who occasionally need to place their hat in luggage, a travel tube, or a compact storage box.
If you do not expect to roll your hat, we generally recommend our standard finish. The standard leather sweatband, liner, and pinch protector provide better protection for everyday wear. The roll-up finish is intended for customers who value flexibility and compact travel storage more than the additional protection provided by the standard interior components.
Please remember: A rolled hat may not look perfectly shaped immediately after it is opened. Rolling does not damage the woven straw, but the crown and brim may need light steaming and reshaping before wearing.
